Introduction
This is the story of television’s start up in Israel as seen through my technically oriented eyes. The history of Israeli Educational Television (IETV) is usually documented from a production perspective, being one of the founding engineers I want to give the engineering staff their day of glory 🙂 These are my random recollections of the time.
If you have any stories, anecdotes or pictures from this period please send them on to me so I can incorporate them into the blog.
Note: the English is followed by a Hebrew for each entry.

Joining the team – עברית
I started my romance with the IETV in 1965. After arriving in Israel as an accidental new immigrant (I only came here as a tourist) and working in various jobs – installing thermocouples at the Haifa oil refineries, repairing electronic equipment and other short time occupations – I came across an advert in the Jerusalem Post, offering roles in the fledgling television station. The advert offered in house training, which for me was a chance to fulfill a lifelong desire to work with television equipment.
The interview was held at the temporary studio complex set up at the Eureka cafe in Hertzliah Pituach. I was interviewed by Doctor Yona Peless and Arieh Kaplan. They asked various background questions and when checking my references from abroad, they saw I had done some work in the repair and maintenance of film projectors. This made them make a note on the interview sheet. They also asked a few technical questions about television technology and I recall explaining how a vacuum tube amplifier could be modified to accommodate a 5MHz bandwidth! 🙂
They showed me around the complex and two things stick in my memory. A nervous teacher wearing a kipa on his head being televised, next to a placard of a boy standing in a canoe and asking: “האם הנער דוד יפול או לא יפול”. The other thing of note was a burly South American, Maximo (Mordechai), delving into the innards of an EMI television monitor.
A month later I had still not heard anything so I sent them a postcard enquiring as to my fate and lo and behold an answer came back saying that I was to be employed. On the given date I arrived at Eureka only to find it deserted. After a few enquiries I was on my way to Ramat Aviv. No car at that time, mid summer and I shlepped my way using busses and walking long distances. They had neglected to tell me of the move to Ramat Aviv.
My first day עברית
The studios were still under construction, cables on the floor, equipment being installed and British engineers everywhere. The entire complex was designed and commissioned by EMI. I was assigned to work with Mr. Barfoot – a chain-smoker who regarded any non smoking signs as superfluous – setting up the two telecine machines. Len Dole was another of the engineers and Mr Graham Phillips a British gentleman engineer, was the engineering superisor.
A few words on Graham Phillips. His temporary office was in the room that housed the microwave transmitter. This transmitter connected us to the main transmitter at Eitanim. His secretary was Jehudit and he enjoyed making lewd remarks about the effect of the microwaves on her health. During his farewell party mention was made of the astounding number of lengths that he had covered at the swimming bath at the Ramat Aviv Hotel. As a gentleman engineer, he strutted around peacock like, looking very important and enquiring into what all the technical staff was doing. Len Dole despised him and told me how to keep him off my back. “The next time he comes to bother you, simply show him the circuit diagram of the equipment you are working on and ask him why this specific resistor and capacitor were used in the circuit”. I did that the next time he came to inspect what I was doing and lo and behold he mumbled something and then went on his way never to bother me again.
The Microwave Transmitter עברית
The dual microwave transmitter was a valve and cavity magnetron monstrosity, possible picked up cheaply from the French manufacturer CSF Thompson, if my memory serves me correctly. It was maintained by the Israel Post Office and required constant tweaking and visits from the French manufacturer. Later it was replaced with solid state equipment from Siemens that worked reliably for many years.
The Master clock was also installed in this room and being a pendulum clock it ticked away merrily. The clock was powered by large accumulator batteries which required constant checking and topping up with distilled water. Shmulik Klimovski was the tech in charge of this high-tech job!
Microwave Transmitter-ה
“My vacuum cleaner no suck moon dust!”
The under floor cabling in the complex was crude. The floor was concrete and the cabling channels were covered with a brick like substance. Dust abounded, but was kept in check by the two elderly, wiry, but tough Romanian-born cleaners. Shteirman was in charge (no known first name) and the second in command, his brother in law, Chaim David.
Shteirman ruled with a fist of iron and a large industrial type vacuum cleaner, keeping the CCR (Central Control Room) clean. This vacuum cleaner was well known to all and at one of the staff parties with the theme of “IETV on the moon”, he was given the phrase to solemnly announce in English: “My vacuum cleaner no suck moon dust!”
“My vacuum cleaner no suck moon dust!”
!my vacuum cleaner no suck moon dust”.
The people of the day:
Dr Yona Peless – “Call me Yona”
First and foremost Dr Yona Peless the designated Head of Engineering. A man who knew how to empathize, he encouraged the entire technical staff to study their specific tasks in engineering, cameras, sound, telecine, patch panels, power distribution and more. For me, his lectures on radiation and light were inspiring, and when lecturing today I still use his original lecture as a basis.
He disliked being referred to as “Doctor Peless” and at one technical meeting he told us to call him Yona or Peless, to which Haim Podgur the chief cameraman replied, “OK then you can call me Haim!” Dr Peless is unfortunately not a well man today.
Arieh Kaplan
Arieh Kaplan (ז”ל) was Doctor Peless’ second in command and eventually took over his job when Peless moved on to establish another Rothschild project, The Center for Educational Technology (CET).
Amos Malach and the Sound team
Amos Malach (ז”ל) was in charge of sound. I was at constant loggerheads with him over the optical and magnetic stripe sound quality of the Philips 16mm projector which was part of the telecine complex. We almost came to blows arguing about the sound quality. We used to run the sound test films countless times trying to improve frequency response, distortion, signal to noise and wow and flutter. He was never ever satisfied with the results. A true perfectionist in sound engineering.
Amos eventually left the IETV and went on to swap wives and jobs. He had a good thing going dubbing films into Russian for the then influx of Russian immigrants. He got Russian actors to create a sound track which was synchronized with a Nagra (his own special system) and which he played back to Russian audiences on Friday showings in various halls throughout the country. Many of the technicians supplemented their income by operating his system.
Zeev Gurevitz – “Vovka”
Zeev Gurevitz, a new immigrant from Russia joined the sound team. He was known to one and all as “Vovka”except Amos who insisted on calling him “Ingineer Gurevitz”.
Later additions to the sound department were Leibela, a Russian immigrant who loved chess and could often be found playing chess with the other avid player - Amos.
Shlomo Freiman, Benny Baruch and Shimon Wiseman were later additions to the sound department.
Victor Migdal
Victor Migdal was a technician with a flair for things mechanical and eventually ended up in the workshop maintaining the pedestals, the pan and tilt heads and the camera lenses.
At one of the early staff parties, Victor made his unforgettable statement: “My name is Victor Migdal and that’s enough!”
ויקטור מגדל היה טכנאי בעל חוש מכני טבעי ובסופו של דבר, נחת בסדנה ועסק בתחזוקה שלה Pedestals, ראשי Pan & Tilt ושל עדשות המצלמות ובאחת המסיבות של כל אנשי טח”י, ויקטור הכריז את המילים הבלטי נשכחות: ”My name is Victor Migdal and that’s enough!”
Yair Mamlok עברית
Yair Mamlok (ז”ל) was in charge of the two RCA TR4 2″ VTRs. They were kept in the “holy of holies” – a spanking clean room with air filters. Yair together with Shmuel Klimovski were in charge of these precious machines. All the technicians were required to wear white lab coats ours were not always spanking clean but Yair would always be seen wearing a pristine white coat.
The VTRs were the special favorite of Peless, as the thesis for his doctorate while working for RCA was the design of an automatic tracking system for 2″ VTR’s. The patent was purchased by the Ampex corporation, the then, world leader in video taping technology.
Those were interesting times, the VTRs took at least 30 seconds to lock and in fact were only capable of locking onto the vertical sync. It was always a hair rising time to run the VTR exactly 30 seconds before the broadcast started and hope that the output signal was locked and stable.
There was no budget to purchase linelock units, which would have enables total locking of the VTRs to the rest of the studio equipment so Yair and Shmulik were commissioned to copying the RCA linelock unit. Many man hours were spent on the project, but unfortunately without success.
The only editing facility in those days was cutting the tape physically and joining it in a way similar to film splicing. A splicer was used together with a special solution which showed up the magnetic footprint of the vertical sync pulse. Generally speaking splicing was considered a dirty word, especially by American Professor Stasheff, the man in charge of training the production staff. Many demonstrations were made for him and Max Rowe (ז”ל) the then overlord of IETV and employed by the Rothschild foundation. Splices were only allowed on a few occasions and only after exhaustive discussions. Programs were 20 minutes in length and had to be completed in a single take! Many takes were needed before a program finally made it to the completed reel. The program was then sent to the Ministry of Education for final approval.
As an עולה חדש I received an unforgettable lesson in Hebrew grammar. A particularly complicated biology program finally made it tape, sent to the Ministry of Education and rejected as the teacher had used the phrase “שוב פעם” instead of “שוב” or “פעם”.
IETV makes the tabloids
An interesting side note at this point. העולם הזה newspaper, always on the lookout for some new scandal in the late 60’s and early seventies, opened with an unwelcome attack on the IETV. The article contained 2 revelations. One was the amount of אש”ל paid to Yaacov Loverbaum as he lived in Jerusalem, but was stationed in Ramat Aviv. A few jokes were passed by the technicians concerning the weight of his salary loksh and how it fell on his arm and caused it to fracture.
The other story was because, Dr Peless had worked at RCA he made sure that the 2″ VTR’s were purchased from them at a price of 40K$ each (A very large sum at that time) instead of purchasing the1/2″ Sony’s at 500$ apiece. Bribery and corruption was insinuated into the newspaper article. Just for the record an RCA VTR was a full bandwidth 5Mhz broadcast machine compared with the Sony Home/industrial machine with a bandwidth of barely 1.5MHz. The power of the press! We all had a good laugh about it.
Job descriptions?
In the early days there was not such thing as הגדרת תפקיד (Job Description) this came up later when ETV joined the Ministry of Education. The technical staff were multifunctional in those days, we worked in maintenance, TD’s (Technical directors), Telecine operators and last but not least cameramen.
Every week Arieh Kaplan would publish a list of operational duties and on this list every day opposite someone’s name would appear an *. This technician was known as the Cochav! His duties were to go into the studio during production breaks and interact with the אחראי CCR and assist in setting up the cameras. The Cameras were 4.5″ Image Orthicon vacuum tubes (IO) and required constant adjustment.
4.5″ Image Orthicon vacuum tubes עברית
Some pertinent facts concerning these monster tubes.
The diameter 4.5″ i.e. 155mm
The Length approximately 500mm
The tubes were never allowed to be placed with the target area facing downwards. Manufacturing procedures could never entirely reduce dust particles within the tube to zero. A down facing tube would result in permanent defects appearing on the televised picture. To ensure that the tubes were not upended during delivery, the carton containing the tube had a small visible window in which a small ball bearing could be seen within an upended funnel. If the ball was outside of the funnel it meant that the tube had been upended. The insurance agent as brought to the studio and shown the position of the ball. The tube was then installed into a camera and inspected for blemishes, this together with the ever ensuing argument as to whether the tube was usable for broadcast or not. There was no way that IETV would broadcast a picture with a blemish to the 30 schools involved in the initial project of the broadcasts!
The earlier tubes had an image target based on soda lime glass and had a tendency to “burn in” This meant if the camera was left to view a fixed image for more than a few minutes then an after image would permanently appear on all subsequent images. This problem was partly overcome by the “orbiting facility” incorporated into the camera which slowly moved the image by changing the magnetic field in a coil surrounding the target of the camera tube. Great idea, but the orbiting had to be switched off when trying to visually align the output of 2 cameras for a production requirement. Woe betide the cameraman who forgot to switching the “orbit” to on after the scene was shot!
The cost of the IO’s were about 500 Pounds Sterling –A substantial sum in those days.
The useful life was about 300 hours, after which in the interests of economy they were used for rehearsals on days before the productions. Tubes also had to be “cooked” a few hours every few months. This led to the constant rotation of the tubes and involved the long set up process which started with preheating the tubes for 20 minutes.
There were only 5 cameras. Two in each of the 2 studios and a “camera 3” which alternated between the studios. It was only made available upon special request and approved by the head of production.

Loss of Sync – Our first תקלה טכנית
One day during the broadcast of a Shlomit Dekel maths program Mordechai (Maximo Bucker) who was in charge of switching the programs on air was chatting to someone next to him. His eyes went back to the output transmission monitor and to his horror he saw that the picture was “rolling” , it had lost vertical sync. He immediately took the signal off air and put out a תקלה טכנית.slide. He ran over to the VTR room to see what had happened. There was Yair happily running the VTR. What had happened, part of the maths lesson involved rotating a full screen board and this gave the appearance of a loss of sync picture. From then on the standing order was “Eyes on the output monitor at all times.”
The big button for Levi Eshkol
The first broadcast was ceremoniously started by the then prime minister Levi Eshkol. After his appropriate speech and in the view of all, he pressed the big red botton to start the broadcast. This button was connected to exactly nothing and when he pressed the button Yair was given the verbal cue to run the VTR.
